# Getting into Your Server

Source: https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-console

A browser console is not offered on any server at launch, so you will not see a **Console** tab or button on your server. This guide explains how you get into your server instead, and what to do when SSH stops working.

## How You Sign In at Launch

Every new server is ordered with an SSH key. You choose it on the order's **SSH Key and Name** step, and that key can sign in as root.

1. Open the server in KPanel.
2. Click the **SSH** chip under its name to copy the login, for example `ssh root@203.0.113.10`.
3. Paste it into your terminal and press Enter.

See [Connecting to Your Server by SSH](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-ssh-connect).

## Get Root Password

Where your server supports it, the build page offers **Get Root Password** once the server is **Ready**.

1. Click **Get Root Password** and confirm it is you.
2. The password is shown once. Click **Copy** and save it somewhere safe.
3. Click **Done** to clear it from the screen.

"Copy this root password now. You won't see it again, and getting a new one replaces it." You can get a new root password up to 3 times per server each hour.

## If You Cannot Get In

| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| You lost your SSH key or password | On the **Rescue** tab, click **Reset Root Password**, where your server supports it. See [Rescue Mode](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-rescue). |
| A firewall rule blocks SSH | Open the **Firewall** tab, add SSH on port 22 back and click **Apply Rules**. See [Server Firewall](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-firewall). |
| A broken setting stops SSH or the server starting | Turn on rescue mode, mount the disk and fix the setting. See [Rescue Mode](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-rescue). |
| Nothing else works and the data does not matter | Reinstall from the **Rebuild** tab. See [Rebuilding a Server](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-rebuild). |

Rescue and rebuild are shown when your server supports them. If your server offers neither, open a ticket from **Support** with the server name and we will help you in.

> **Note:** A key you add on the **SSH Keys** page is not put on servers that already exist. It is used for servers you order after you add it. To use a new key on a running server, add it inside the server.

## Add a Second Key Now

The easiest way to avoid being locked out is to have more than one way in. Once you are signed in, add a second key, for example from another computer, to `/root/.ssh/authorized_keys`. See [Adding and Managing SSH Keys](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-ssh-keys).

KapsuleHost keeps a management key (named kapsulehost-management) on every server we build, for backups, monitoring and security updates. Removing it stops those features.

## Metal Servers Ordered Before the New Catalogue

Older Metal servers have their own console options. See [Dedicated Server Console Access](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/dedicated-servers-console).
