# Creating a Server

Source: https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-create

You order a server in a few short steps: where it runs, its size, how long you pay for, its system, and the SSH key you sign in with. You check everything on a review screen before you pay, then follow the build until the server is ready.

## Before You Start

- Decide which type of server you need. See [Choosing a Server](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-overview).
- Have a card ready. A card on file is required for every server.
- Have your SSH public key ready. Every new server is ordered with an SSH key, and at launch that key is how you sign in. You can add it first on the **SSH Keys** page in the sidebar, or during the order. See [Adding and Managing SSH Keys](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-ssh-keys).
- Only the Owner and Admin roles can order servers.

## Opening the Order

There are two ways in:

- **From our website.** Choose a size on a server page. If you are signed in, you go straight to the order in KPanel with that size picked. If you are new, you create an account first and then land on the same order.
- **From KPanel.** Open the section for the server type in the sidebar, for example **Standard Cores**, and click **Create Server**. A section shows in the sidebar once your account has a server of that type. For your first Standard server, open **Store** and choose **Cloud VPS**. For your first server of another type, such as ARM, Storage or Metal, choose a size on our website. If you are signed in, you go straight to that type's order in KPanel.

The order page is headed with the type, for example **New Standard Server**, and shows "Step" and the number you are on. An **Order Summary** fills in as you go. On a phone or iPad it is a price bar at the bottom.

## Step by Step

1. **Location.** On **Choose a Location**, pick a location from the list under the map. Each shows how many sizes are available there, and any monthly extra for that location. See [Server Locations](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-regions-availability).
2. **Size.** On **Choose a Size**, pick the CPU, memory and disk you need. Every size includes unlimited traffic. The best seller has a **Most Popular** badge.
3. **Term.** On **Choose a Term**, pick **Monthly**, **12 Months** or **24 Months**. Longer terms show a **Save** badge and how they are billed. 12 and 24 months are paid up front for the whole term.
4. **System.** On **Choose a System**, pick an operating system under **Operating Systems**, or a ready-made app under **One-Click Apps**. Each shows **Included** or its monthly licence price.
5. **Add-ons.** Shown when any are offered. All optional. Choose an extra IPv4 address, a Block Volume or a Load Balancer here, when you order. Managed Backups can also be turned on later.
6. **SSH Key and Name.** Type a **Server Name**: lower-case letters, numbers and hyphens, up to 63 characters. Tick the SSH keys that can sign in as root, up to 20. Every new server is ordered with a key. To add a new one, click **Add an SSH Key**, type a **Key Name**, paste the **Public Key** and click **Add Key**. Windows servers sign in with a password, so SSH keys are not used for them.
7. **Review.** On **Review Your Server**, check every choice. Click **Change** next to anything you want to change.
8. Click **Add to Cart**, then pay at checkout.

Click **Continue** to move to the next step, or **Back** to go back. Your choices are kept in the page address, so a refresh does not lose them.

> **Note:** For hourly GPU servers, the **Term** step is replaced by **Credits**. It shows the **Hourly Rate** and your **Credit Balance**, and you tick "I understand this server runs from my credits and stops automatically when they run out." See [Hourly GPU and Credits](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-gpu).

## Prices and Tax

The summary shows the price per month, or per hour for hourly GPU. When a location costs extra, it says the price includes it. Prices show in your billing currency. Any tax is added at checkout: GST is added for NZD accounts only. The price you pay is locked for that server, and renewals charge the same price. See [Server Billing and Terms](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-pricing-gst).

If prices change while you are ordering, KPanel says "Prices were updated. Review your order." Check the review screen and add the server to your cart again.

## Follow the Build

After checkout, click **Follow Your Server's Build**. The build page, **Building Your Server**, "updates by itself as each step finishes": **Ordered**, **Paid**, **Building**, **Installing OS** and **Ready**. Each step shows **Done**, **In progress**, **Waiting** or **Failed**.

![The Building Your Server page in KPanel](https://support.kapsulehost.com/help/screenshots/cloud-servers-create-building.cad14c09.webp)

When it says "Your Server Is Ready. Open it to see its address and sign in.", click **Open Server**. Click the **SSH** chip under the server's name to copy the login. See [Connecting to Your Server by SSH](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-ssh-connect).

### Get Root Password

Where your server supports it, the build page also offers **Get Root Password** once the server is **Ready**.

1. Click **Get Root Password** and confirm it is you.
2. The password is shown once. Click **Copy** and save it somewhere safe.
3. Click **Done** to clear it from the screen.

Getting a new one replaces the old one. You can do it up to 3 times per server each hour.

## If Something Goes Wrong

- **A size or location is not available.** KPanel says so in one line, for example "That size isn't available in" your location. Choose another location, or another size.
- **"This is not available yet."** Ordering for that server type has not opened yet.
- **"That's a private key, so it wasn't sent."** Paste the public key instead: the line that starts with `ssh-ed25519` or `ssh-rsa`.
- **"Something went wrong building this server. Our team has been alerted."** Click **Contact Support** on the build page if you want to talk to us.
- **"You don't have permission to order servers on this account."** Your team role cannot order servers. Ask the account owner.
