# Managed Backups

Source: https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-managed-backups

Managed Backups make scheduled copies of a server and keep them for you, so you can put the whole server back to an earlier moment. A backup is taken every day, and the last 7 are kept. Each new one replaces the oldest. They are images of the whole server, kept in the same location as the server. You turn them on or off for each server, and they are billed with the server.

## What They Cost

Managed Backups cost 35% of the server's own price, on the same term as the server, with no discount for a longer term. The confirm box shows the exact price and term before you turn them on. See the price on the server's page or on our [pricing page](https://kapsulehost.com/en-nz/pricing).

If you turn them on part way through a term, you pay the difference straight away for the time left. From your next renewal they renew with the server.

## Turn On Managed Backups

1. Sign in to [KPanel](https://kpanel.kapsulehost.com).
2. In the sidebar, click **Managed Backups**.
3. Find the server and click its switch.
4. In **Turn On Managed Backups?**, check the **Price** and **Term**, then click **Turn On Backups**.

KPanel says Managed Backups are on for that server. The first backup shows under **Backups** in the server's menu once it is made.

You can also add Managed Backups when you order a server, on the **Add-Ons** step.

## The Managed Backups Page

The page lists every server that can have Managed Backups:

| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| **Server** | The server's name. Click it to open its **Backups**. |
| **Price** | What Managed Backups cost for that server each month |
| **Last Backup** | When the last backup was made, or "No backups yet" |
| **Backups** | **On** or **Off** |

Click **View Backups** to see a server's backups and restore one. The same switch is under **Backups** in each server's menu.

If no server on your account can have Managed Backups, the page and its sidebar row do not show.

## Turn Off Managed Backups

1. Open **Managed Backups** and click the server's switch.
2. Click **Turn Off Backups**.

Backups keep running until the end of your paid term, then stop. Existing backups are deleted when they stop. You can turn them back on before then.

## Restore a Backup

Restores are made under **Backups** in the server's menu. See [Server Backups and Restores](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-backups).

## Who Can Change Them

Only the Owner and Admin roles can turn Managed Backups on or off. Other roles see "Your role can see Managed Backups but cannot change them."

## Troubleshooting

**"The charge for Managed Backups was not accepted, so nothing was changed."** Check your card in **Billing**, then try again.

**"The charge is still being confirmed."** The switch worked and billing is catching up. Nothing more to do.

**"Managed Backups cannot be changed for this server."** This server cannot have Managed Backups. Take [snapshots](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-snapshots) before big changes instead.

**"The server is still being set up."** Wait until the server shows **Running**, then try again.
