# Getting Started with Standard Servers

Standard servers run on shared x86 cores and suit websites, apps and everyday workloads. They run almost any Linux software, are ready in about a minute, and can be resized as you grow.

## What a Standard Server Is

A Standard server is a virtual machine with its own operating system, its own IP addresses and full root access. Its cores are shared with other servers on the same host. That is fine for most workloads, which are busy in bursts. If your app runs flat out all day, look at [Dedicated servers](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/dedicated-servers-overview), which keep their cores to themselves.

In KPanel, Standard servers live in the **Standard Cores** section of the sidebar.

## Sizes

| Size | vCPU | RAM | Disk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meteor | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB |
| Comet | 4 | 6 GB | 100 GB |
| Atlas | 6 | 16 GB | 200 GB |
| Apollo | 8 | 24 GB | 300 GB |
| Vega | 12 | 48 GB | 400 GB |
| Pulsar | 16 | 64 GB | 500 GB |

If a price is missing here, see the price on the server's page or on our [pricing page](https://kapsulehost.com/en-nz/pricing). Every size includes unlimited traffic.

Paying for 12 or 24 months up front costs less each month. See [Server Billing and Terms](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-pricing-gst).

## Where They Run

A location is shown only where that size can be built, and the available locations are shown when you order. Some locations add a fixed amount each month, and the order screen shows it before you choose. See [Server Locations](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-regions-availability).

## Operating Systems

You can start from **Ubuntu 24.04 LTS**, **Ubuntu 22.04 LTS** or **Debian 12**. Where we can build them, Windows Server, cPanel and Plesk are offered too, with their licence price shown on the order screen.

## Ordering Your First Standard Server

1. Choose a size on our website, or in KPanel open **Standard Cores** and click **Create Server**. For your first server, open **Store** and choose **Cloud VPS**.
2. Choose a location, a size, a term and a system, then tick your SSH key and name the server.
3. Review your choices and click **Add to Cart**, then pay at checkout.

The server is usually ready about a minute after checkout. [Creating a Server](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-create) covers each step.

## After It Is Ready

- [Connect over SSH](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-ssh-connect) with the key you added when you ordered.
- Set up the [firewall](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-firewall) for the ports your app needs.
- [Resize](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/cloud-servers-resize) when you need more CPU, memory or disk.
