# Email Aliases

Source: https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/email-aliases

An email alias is an additional address that delivers mail into an existing mailbox. For example, you might have one mailbox for `jane@yourdomain.com` but also want to receive mail sent to `support@yourdomain.com` and `hello@yourdomain.com` in the same inbox. Aliases make this possible without creating separate accounts.

### Aliases vs Forwarding

| Feature | Alias | Forward |
|---------|-------|---------|
| Delivers to a KapsuleHost mailbox | Yes | No |
| Keeps mail on KapsuleHost servers | Yes | Optional |
| Requires a separate login | No | No |
| Can send from the alias address | Yes (with client config) | No |

Use aliases when you want everything in one KapsuleHost mailbox. Use [forwarding](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/email-forwarding) when you want mail delivered to an external provider.

### Adding an Alias in KPanel

1. Log in to KPanel at [kpanel.kapsulehost.com](https://kpanel.kapsulehost.com)
2. Go to **Mailboxes** and open the mailbox you want to add an alias to
3. Click the **Aliases** tab
4. Click **Add Alias**
5. Enter the alias address (for example, `support@yourdomain.com`)
6. Click **Save**

The alias is active immediately.

> **Note:** Aliases must be on the same domain as the parent mailbox. To receive mail from a different domain, use email forwarding instead.

### Common Use Cases

- **Role addresses**: `info@`, `hello@`, `support@`, `sales@` all delivered to one inbox (for a team answering one address, see [Shared Inboxes for Team Addresses](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/email-shared-inboxes))
- **Name variations**: `firstname@` and `firstname.lastname@` pointing to the same account
- **Catch-all addresses**: Receive mail sent to any address at your domain

### Setting Up a Catch-All

A [catch-all address](https://support.kapsulehost.com/en-nz/email-catch-all) receives any email sent to your domain that does not match an existing mailbox or alias. This prevents legitimate messages from bouncing.

1. Go to **Mailboxes** in KPanel
2. Click **Catch-All Settings** for your domain
3. Select the mailbox to receive unmatched email
4. Click **Save**

> **Warning:** Catch-all addresses tend to receive a high volume of spam, since spammers often guess random addresses at known domains. Monitor the inbox regularly or use an alias for specific addresses instead.

### Removing an Alias

1. Open the mailbox in KPanel
2. Go to the **Aliases** tab
3. Click **Delete** next to the alias you want to remove
